La Punta de N´Amer stands at over 35 metres above sea level. This unusual looking tower was built back in the late 17th century. It looks more like a defense fortress than a simple watchtower used for transmitting signals.

The castle's history begins in 1585. An inspection was carried out on the site by viceroy Lluis Vich. He decided it was necessary to build a tower here.

Construction was postponed due to economic reasons until the 4th of September 1688, when the Gran i General Consell agreed to its construction, with financial support from various sources. The actual construction began in 1969 and wasn’t completed till over 100 years later.

Punta de N´Amer was constructed as a cube with a quadrangular pyramid. The stone used to create the fortress is called “Mares”. It produces the effect of a very solid construction and an imposing fortress.

There’s a moat surrounding the castle which has been excavated in solid rock. To access the castle you’ll need to cross the wooden drawbridge (currently restored) on the main face of the castle.

Inside you’ll see a huge spiral staircase that leads you upstairs to the attic. The roof is covered with limestone slabs, a small canal carved into these slabs collects water which is then drained into a well.

Punta de N´Amer fortress is on private property that has been declared a Natural Area Of Special Interest Balearic Islands government. This is a fascinating structure. Well worth a visit.
